
Queensland X-Ray’s Trainee Sonographer Program provides an exceptional opportunity for students to gain full-time paid employment while completing a Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound through the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and other regional universities. This two-year traineeship offers hands-on experience and mentorship, preparing you to become a fully qualified Sonographer upon successful completion of your Diploma.

Program Overview
- Full-time paid employment while undertaking your studies and completing required supervised clinical experience.
- Complete a Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound at QUT, Monash, Charles Sturt or other regional universities.
- 2-year traineeship delivered by highly skilled experienced Sonographers.
- Graduate as a fully Qualified Sonographer upon successful completion of the Diploma.
- Regional candidates may be eligible for university fee reimbursement after 3 years of service post-qualification.
- Applications for the 2025 Trainee Sonographer Program are currently closed. Applications for the 2026 Intake will open in September 2025, for a limited time.
Eligibility
To be considered for the Trainee Sonographer Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a recognised bachelor's degree in a relevant allied health field (e.g. Medical Imaging, Nursing, Biomedical Science).
- Be enrolled in, or eligible to enrol in, a Graduate Diploma of Medical Ultrasound. Eligibility for Graduate Diploma programs varies between universities and education providers. Please contact your chosen university for specific eligibility details.
- Be willing to commit to living in the region for a minimum of 5 years following qualification. Regions eligible for the program include: Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns, Mackay, Townsville, and Toowoomba.

Application process:
To apply, applications must be submitted through our website for current vacancies or live Seek adverts. The selection process includes completion of a 30-minute examination and interview.

- A copy of relevant transcripts (from your Bachelor's degree and/or any other related study)
Terms and Conditions
You will need to:
- Pass all university and Queensland X-Ray assessments to maintain employment and position in the Trainee Sonographer Program.
- You must remain enrolled in your Graduate Diploma course throughout the duration of the program.
- After qualification, you will be required to serve a minimum of 3 years of full-time employment as a qualified Sonographer with Queensland X-Ray in exchange for the 2-year paid traineeship.

Withdrawal and Termination
- Withdrawal by recipient: Trainee Sonographers who withdraw from the program may be required to repay some or all of the costs associated with the Traineeship.
- Termination of employment by Queensland X-Ray: Queensland X-Ray may terminate a Trainee Sonographer agreement if a recipient does not satisfactorily meet the University and Queensland X-Ray assessment criteria.
